Karen Valerio is a sophomore student at Lehigh University from the bumpin' barrio of Newark, New Jersey. Her Africana Studies major is partnered with minor disciplines in Latin American Studies and French. As an Afro-Latina of Dominican heritage, Karen is determined to make strides in bridging the gap between the Black and Latino identity. She believes that one does not have to choose one over the other but can claim both proudly. She is on a path of discovery and hopes to fully embrace Sankofa, a West African symbol that prompts one to always remember the past (our roots) for therein lies a better future, for if forgotten, we are destined to repeat it. On campus, Karen has the privilege of serving as the Public Relations Chair for the Black Student Union, being a member of the Latino Student Alliance, and a member of the Rugby team. After graduation, Karen seeks to pursue a Master's in a discipline related to international humanitarian work in areas of Africa and the Caribbean primarily with concentration on educational uplift and poverty relief.
