Documentary Film as Qualitative Research: A Case Study Workshop

This workshop will examine the intersections between documentary film and "traditional" qualitative research methodologies. Using the award-winning "White Scripts and Black Supermen: Black Masculinities in Comic Books" as a case study, 
Jonathan Gayles will describe his own process in producing the film as an independent filmmaker. During the workshop, Dr. Gayles will share documents, video and web-based materials associated with the film. Specific topics to be addressed include:
 
The iterative research question
  • Purposive and snowball sampling
  • Editing text/editing video 
  • Beyond the talking head (B-roll as visual context)
  • Ethics and authorship
  • Publication, distribution and dissemination
