The trouble with monogamy: companionate marriage and gendered suspicions in Bamako, Mali
Monogamy remains highly problematic as a marital ideal for most people in Mali. While it does appeal to men and women alike, the prospect of a legally binding pledge of monogamy arouses a host of strongly gendered suspicions and antagonisms. The result is that polygyny continues to shape choices, discourses and practices pertaining to marriage in Bamako.
